Who We Are

We are an organic wine producer from the Dão Region, focused on unique Portuguese grape varieties.

The estate bearing this name was already listed on the land register in 1897 when vineyards covered the greater part of it. The solid, granite-walled adega still stands as a reminder of past harvests. Little else is left from that period, apart from the startling natural beauty of the spot and the Maias, the flowering broom which yearly heralds spring with a burst of colour.
Restoration work began only comparatively recently, illustrating the confidence of the present owners in the quality and potential of the area for the production of superb wines.
The quinta, between Nabais and S. Paio de Gouveia lies in the foothills of the Serra da Estrela, within the area of the Natural Park. It covers about 25 hectares of which 15 hectares have 23 year old vines, while 10 hectares have recently planted stock. The planting of new vines is in line with an innovative strategy for Dão production where the vines are planted in rows running vertically rather than horizontally. The white grape varieties are primarily Malvasia, Encruzado, Gouveio (aka Verdelho), Cerceal and Barcelo, while the reds are Jaen (aka Tinta Mencia from Bierzo), Touriga Nacional, Tinta Amarela, Tinta Roriz (aka Tempranillo) and Alfrocheiro.
Since 1992, the grapes of the quinta have been vinified in the adega of the Quinta dos Roques under a mutual co-operation agreement. Production at present is in the region of 100,000 litres and tending to increase, one third of the output in white, two thirds red. The wines are marketed under the label Maias, Quinta das Maias and Flor das Maias, and are only bottled when the quality is good enough to satisfy the most demanding consumer. The white wine very floral and with a strong minerality presents good conditions for ageing well. The red, showing the robustness of a mountain wine and the rich bouquet, delicacy and crispness that only the Jaen grape produces, has already received a number of both national and international awards.
In 1996 we were the pioneers in the Dão of varietal wines when we produced a red varietal – Jaen – together with a white varietal – Malvasia Fina, this last one partially fermented in new French oak barrels. Since then we enlarged this innovative side with two more white varietals – Verdelho and Barcelo. Regarding this last one, we are the only producer in the Dão that has this traditional but almost forgotten grape variety. Believing that we have to protect as much as possible our environment and way of life for the future generations, we decided in 2007 to make the transition from integrated production method (sustainable agriculture) to organic viticulture and in 2012 we made the next logical step and began to produce organic wines duly certified.
